Objectives and Requirements

   1.Foreign Languages and Literature Programs (1-29)

      Students in these foreign languages and literature programs are expected to have a solid grounding in the basic skills of the foreign language they major in and a proper mix of knowledge in different subjects. They are expected to become competent translators, researchers, teachers or managers in their prospective careers in fields such as international relations, economics and trade, culture exchange, news media, education, science and technology and tourism. These undergraduate programs include courses in foreign language and literature, history, politics, economics, foreign relations, socio-cultural studies. Students will also be given extensive training in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating in the foreign languages they study. Students completing their studies are expected to have good qualities in terms of their abilities in translation, research, teaching and management with basic research capabilities. Undergraduate programs are completed in 4 years. Those who have successfully fulfilled all requirements are awarded the bachelor¡¯s degree of arts.

    2.Chinese language and literature

        Students in the Chinese Language and Literature Program are expected to develop a good understanding of Chinese literature, Chinese culture and cross-culture communication between China and other countries. With an emphasis on bilingual education, the program offers a balanced curriculum of Chines and English courses. Students completing the program are expected to be qualified for teaching Chinese language as a foreign languages and for work related to culture exchange in government departments, educational institutions, press, and culture exchange management agencies. The program offers courses in linguistics, second language learning, English and cross-culture studies. Students are expected to have developed a high level of English proficiency and the basic research abilities in language studies. The program is completed in 4 years and students completing all course requirements are awarded the bachelor¡¯s degree of arts.

    3.Economics (International Economics and Trade)

      

      The program in International econonics and Trade offers training to prospective executives, managers and researchers in international business, foreign investment enterprises and related government departments. The students are required to take courses in foreign languages, economics, international business management and to develop basic skills and research abilities in international business management. The program is completed in 4 years and students fulfilling all requirements are awarded a BA degree in economics.

    4.Political Sciences (International Studies)

The program in International Studies offers training to prospective professionals working for the foreign affairs or related departments, researchers and teachers in international studies. The courses offered include foreign languages, diplomacy, international politics, law, economics. Students are expected to undergo systematic training in developing the knowledge skills and competence in related areas. The program is completed in 4 years and students fulfilling all requirements are awarded a BA degree in law.

Curriculum and Teaching

Starting from 1999, students in undergraduate programs can take courses designed for a major or a minor degree. The credit system allows the students to accumulate the points they have obtained by taking compulsory and elective courses offered by either the departments or the university as a whole. Students are expected to take 3000 hours of lessons on average and to have 170 points of credit in 4 years. Courses for a minor degree are offered in English, international studies and economics and trade. Students who have fulfilled the requirements are awarded a minor degree in these subjects.

Enrolment

The undergraduate programs at BFSU enrols 600 students nation-wide each year. Students enter the university through (1) pre-exam enrolment for minor language studies; (2) recommendation and (3) national university entry examinations.
